Trip to National Museum,Onikan

I took the most interesting trip by myself last Wednesday. On a whim i stopped by National Museum in Onikan,Lagos State.Boy! was i not glad i did. The experience was priceless. It was like i could touch history and for a few seconds, i stepped into a bygone era.
I love history, i love culture. so maybe that's why it was so much fun...Fun in the context of mentally stimulating and visually pleasing. I saw artefact's from all over Nigeria. Items from the West standing side by side that from the North and South. It sort of made it easy to compare and contrast aspect of our cultures.I was particularly in awe of the life sized model of 3 kings representing Oba's from North,South and West.I did find the life sized masquerades rather frighting.......For lovers of the art, there's a lot to see like potteries, wood works, iron works, beaded items, warfare tools etc.
I was told a tale by my guide which i found quite fascinating. It's the story of Ogedemgbe of Ijesa.History has it that he was a feared warrior and chief from Ilesa now in present day Osun state. After his death his family reported constantly hearing strange sounds from his war garment and decided to either burn the outfit or give it out to anyone willing to take it off their hands. That was how the outfit journeyed to National Museum.Besides the outfit is a picture of the late warrior with some family members.
For those with no interest whatsoever in physical history,i can guarantee you that there is one item on display you would most certainly be interested in!...what is it??...the bullet ridden Mercedes Benz car in which the late head of state of Nigeria, General Murtala Mohammed was assassinated in. Still very much there for all to see.I must say it's very executive looking.I did hear that the driver of the late head of state, who was the only survivor of the incident, now a very old man.still comes to visit and view the car from time to time.........awwwww
